In 1810s and 1820s, Cherokees who were fleeing the push by whites who have been taking their lands within the southeastern U.S, gained rights to a number of the current County’s space. But by 1828, these Cherokees were moved out to Indian Territory, practically 10 years earlier than the remainder of the Cherokees could be compelled out of the southeast alongside the Trail of Tears. Some of these later Cherokees would cross parts of Washington County in . in local history, and in the national historical past that is part of our native story.
